Football: Maher fails to see funny side

Southend United skipper Kevin Maher today branded referee Mick Fletcher a `joke' after his soft dismissal at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

The Shrimpers midfielder controversially received a red card just eight minutes from time following two dubious bookings in a below par display from the West Midlands based official.

"Right from the very first whistle the referee was a joke and even the fourth official was laughing about him at half time," slammed the 27-year-old.

"He gave decisions that none of us could understand and he missed a blatant elbow on Andy Edwards when he was standing just five yards away with a perfect view of the incident.

"I don't know how he failed to give anything for that, but it summed up his performance."
