Clacton: Skatepark safety work still held up

From the archive, first published Wednesday 15th Feb 2006.

Safety improvements to a skatepark are still on hold a year after guarantees were made to implement them.

Problems with the surface and ramps at the skatepark in Clacton have not been resolved as Tendring Council is still deciding how to deal with them.

Complaints centered on the amount of sand on the surface and the issue of securing the ramps that are being moved into dangerous positions.

Stephen Mayzes, of the Tendring Youth Council, run independently from Tendring Council, wrote to the council a year ago to highlight the problems and is still waiting for action.

He said: "The surface is in a poor condition. The amount of sand makes it difficult and dangerous for skaters.

"I received a letter assuring me that the ramps would be secured and the surface improved a year ago but nothing has been done."

Kevin Harkin, assistant head of leisure services at Tendring Council, said the original surface covering the seating area was placed at great expense but was subsequently vandalised.

. He added: "An order has been secured and a new surface will be in place by the end of March 2006."
