BASILDON could be a tourist hotspot...if only its attractions were marketed.
That's the hope of council chiefs drawing up a strategy of how to sell the district as a destination for day trips and short breaks. At the moment, 99 per cent of councils in the UK spend more than Basildon on attracting visitors.
Councillors are to debate how the district could make the most of assets such as Festival Leisure Park and Wat Tyler Country Park.
Tony Hedley, Tory cabinet member for leisure and open space, said the closeness to London meant it was feasible to promote it as a short-stay destination.
