Clacton: Protests over mental health centre

From the archive, first published Thursday 8th Mar 2007.

A PETITION has been launched against plans for a residential centre for people with mental health problems.

The former Hertford House Hotel in Park Way, Clacton, could care for up to 18 people if the bid is successful.

Applicant Joe Matheron says he hopes to provide a resource like no other in the county.

Opposition is already forming and Peter Brock, who lives next door to the building, has collected 40 signatures from objectors.

Mr Brock, 70, said: "The value of our property would be reduced if this went ahead."

Mr Brock said he was worried about the mentally ill people who would be housed in the former hotel.

"You hear about it on the news - you wake up in the night and realise they're in your house," he continued.

"I've also heard of them knocking on the door and asking for drops of brandy."

Another resident, Dave Bolton, added: "It's a bit frightening with kids around.

"I know they've got to go somewhere but I don't think they should come to a residential area like this."

Mr Matheron, the applicant, said the home would not accept people with a history of sexual offences.

"We are supportive of the fact that residents have concerns and appreciate the reaction the planning application has had," he said.

"We would welcome the opportunity to address any concerns on an individual basis and will work closely with them to allay any fears."

He said the centre would allow individuals experiencing mental health problems to live in an "enabling environment" designed to give them personal space with trained staff.

Mr Matheron added: "A lack of the right facilities for individuals experiencing mental health problems is something many areas of the country face.

"We believe there is a need in Clacton."

Tendring Council has the final say on the application.
