5,500 support MPs’ Dartford toll campaign

MORE than 5,500 people have responded to a postcard campaign to get a 90 per cent discount at the Dartford crossing for local people.

Basildon and East Thurrock MP Angela Smith and Thurrock MP Andrew Mackinlay sent out the postcards to Thurrock residents at the beginning of January.

After a massive response, they have now handed over the responses to Transport Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman.

Mr Mackinlay told the minister: "This is an exceptionally high response that shows the depth of feeling of local residents. I therefore expect you to respond positively to this overwhelming call for a cut in the toll."

Mrs Smith added: "We have been impressed by the level of support our campaign has attracted. The case for a toll discount for local people is irresistible." A 90 per cent discount would mean Thurrock residents would pay 15 pence instead of £1.

The Government proposals, to raise the charge from £1 to £1.50, have been through a consultation period which ended last Friday.

The proposed changes also include a discounted rate of £1 for Dart-Tag holders and removing charges for crossing at night between 10pm and 6am.

Meanwhile Thurrock Council is still pressing ahead with its campaign to abolish tolls at the crossing.

This is despite the recommendation to increase the amount of money Thurrock and all Thames Gateway local authorities get from toll receipts.

The Government expects to get £76million each year if the increases go ahead. The council's recommendation was put forward at the East of England Reg-

ional Assembly's Plan-

ning Panel last Thursday, as part of its proposed response to a public consultation by the Depart-

ment of Transport.

Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Highways and Tran-

sport, Councillor Leo Milan-Vega, said: "It is not about the extra money, it is about what is fair to residents of Thurrock.

"We have called for the crossing to be free and we continue to call for an end to the tolls now."
