Mersea: N-plant quiz for islanders

From the archive, first published Friday 9th Mar 2007.

Mersea islanders are being polled on whether a new nuclear power station should be built across the River Blackwater at Bradwell.

The internet poll (see link below) has been set up after power chiefs confirmed Bradwell was on a shortlist of possible sites for the next wave of nuclear reactors.

British Energy already owns land next to the old Magnox reactor which shut down five years ago, and operates eight other N-plants in the UK.

The company is assessing all nine sites as possible locations for new power stations.

British Energy said it made sense to build new reactors close to current sites because the locations share the same advantages.

A spokesman stressed this week proposals were at a very early stage.
