Rovers aim to shoot down high fliers

From the archive, first published Friday 9th Mar 2007.

Great Wakering Rovers are due to start a run of successive games against the three teams currently leading the Ryman Division One North table when they host second-placed Harlow tomorrow.

Rovers are set to entertain leaders AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday before travelling to third-placed Canvey a week tomorrow.

The wet weather has hit Iain O'Connell's men hard and, with just seven weeks of the season to go, they still have 15 league matches to play.

Tuesday's scheduled hosting of Aveley was the latest victim, but generally fine weather is predicted for the build-up to tomorrow's match.

"At least with so many games off we're fairly free of injuries, unless someone's slipped over in the wet! said O'Connell.

"The next week will be tough, but we were the better side in narrowly losing at Harlow a few weeks ago.

"We all know Hornchurch are a very strong side who look certain to win the league and the boys owe me a good performance against Canvey as we were terrible losing to them earlier in the season."
