Clacton: Royal Hotel decision soon

From the archive, first published Tuesday 10th Apr 2007.

A MULTI-million pound project to revamp a historic seafront hotel is set to go before planners for the first time.

The Royal Hotel in Clacton will be transformed into a hotel, bar, restaurant, shops and apartments if plans are given the green light.

The scheme, which will cost an estimated £10 million, has been fine-tuned since it was unveiled at a public exhibition more than a year ago.

The number of hotel rooms has risen from 17 to 21, apartments have dropped from 55 to 46 and plans for an underground car park have been ditched.

Russ Drage Architects describe the building as "a catalyst and benchmark for future new developments in Clacton".

Tendring Council's development control committee has been recommended to approve the application when it meets next Tuesday.
