Candidates for the district and town council elections on May 3 have been announced.
Changes in Braintree district include the stepping down of Councillor Peter Turner (Lib Dem, Black Notley and Terling) after 23 years. He has moved to Suffolk, where he will be standing in the local elections there for the Leavenheath ward.
Mr Turner said: "It's the end of an era."
Also stepping down are Councillor Michael Haslem (Con, Bocking Blackwater), and Councillor Neil Coughlan (Lab) will not be contesting his seat in Braintree East, but will stand instead for Hatfield Peverel ward, where Councillor David Finch (Con) also steps down, and will now stand for Braintree South ward.
Councillor Nigel Edey (Con) hopes to take the Braintree East seat away from Labour, and is backing younger candidate Malcolm Dunn (Con) to step into his shoes in Coggeshall and North Feering ward.
Mr Edey, 70, said: "In the present political climate I think I'll have a reasonable chance in a fight against Labour."
Councillor Roy Cavinder (Lib Dem, Braintree Central) will also not be contesting his seat on May 3, and Great Notley and Braintree West Councillor Arthur Jenner is also stepping down after four years on the council, due to work committments.
Candidates have until noon, April 11, to withdrawn their nomination.
