Tony’s bid for TV fame

From the archive, first published Wednesday 11th Apr 2007.

CHELMSFORD'S town crier realised a dream when he sang in front of thousands.

Tony Appleton, of Baddow Road, went to his second audition for the ITV show Britain's Got Talent, at Shaftesbury Theatre, London.

The 70-year-old sang Elvis Presley's the Wonder Of You in his town crier's uniform, in front of celebrities and 2,500 people, without musical backing.

However, the judges voted the town crier out of the contest before he had finished performing.
