Walton: Fresh fears at seaside pub

From the archive, first published Thursday 12th Apr 2007.

FRESH fears have surfaced at a seaside pub after a decontamination unit was brought in to deal with an asbestos scare.

The potentially deadly dust was discovered at the Royal Albion in Walton after patrons and bar staff cleared out a cellar.

It is thought tests have confirmed there are airborne traces of asbestos in the building, which was closed on Tuesday.

There are renewed concerns because a Christening party involving dozens of children used a section of the pub believed to be affected before the full scale of the scare was established.

At least ten people who helped during the clean-up were exposed to the material from the ceiling and pipe lagging, the Gazette has been told.
