Police warning over spate of burglaries

From the archive, first published Friday 13th Apr 2007.

DETECTIVES warned residents in Pitsea and Vange to take extra care protecting their homes following a spate of burglaries.

Ten homes have been broken into in the past week across Fryerns, Felmores and Vange, with thieves helping themselves to valuable possessions, ranging from electrical goods to jewellery.

Police believe the warm weather has prompted the surge as most of the break-ins have seen burglars getting in through open front doors, patio doors and windows.

Det Sgt Dixie Dean, of Pitsea CID, urged homeowners and the public to be extremely vigilant with summer on the horizon.

He said: "The public are my eyes and ears.

"They are out there every day, they know who lives in their area and they know if someone is suspicious and out of place.

"We are asking members of the public who spot something suspicious, even if they are in doubt, to call us.

"But we are also asking people to be mindful when they are leaving properties.

"Whether people are going out to talk to a neighbour or even going to the bottom of the garden, we would advise them to lock their windows and doors."

In an attempted burglary in South Crockerford, Vange, crooks caused £500 damage when they tried to force open the property's patio doors. They fled empty-handed.
