Mum and baby flee fire

From the archive, first published Friday 13th Apr 2007.

A SMOKE alarm saved a young mother and her baby from a chip pan fire.

The woman was enjoying chips for dinner at her home in Waarden Road, Canvey at about 6.30pm last night.

But she didn't realise she had left the heat on underneath the pan, and it caught fire.

Luckly, the smoke alarm sounded, so she went to the kitchen.

On seeing the flames, she grabbed her baby and left the house.

Two fire engines from Canvey rushed to the scene, and were able to tackle the flames before too much damage was done to the kitchen.

Assistant Divisional Officer Nigel Dilley said "Accidents are always going to happen, but having a working smoke alarm means that you can get out and get the fire service out before life and property are put at serious risk."
