Shocker for Billericay

From the archive, first published Sunday 15th Apr 2007.

Carshalton 3, Billericay Town 2

A disastrous first half saw Billericay lose at Carshalton and they have been edged off the top of the Ryman Premier League.

Town staged a late rally with goals from Jamie Dormer and Darren Blewitt, but it was too little too late.

Billericay were without the suspended Danny Kerrigan and injured Joe Flack so there were recalls for Rob Swaine and Billy Holland in a youthful line-up that contained no less than five teenagers.

Town got off to a bad start, when they conceded their first goal after just 16 minutes, Mark Marshall allowed to finish from close range after a Carshalton counter attack capitalised on a misplaced pass in the Billericay midfield.

Things got worse for Billericay on the half hour mark when a header from Charlie Side took a deflection that helped it loop over the stranded Ronnie Worster.

Carshalton had a third goal disallowed for offside before half-time, but a minute after the break they did make it three when the Town defense failed to deal with a long ball forward and Jack MacCleod was able to round Worster and score.

Town attempted to rally with the introduction of Matt Game and Adrian Allen. and pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time when Jamie Dormer forced the ball home after his initial shot had been blocked. Allen then went close before Darren Blewitt headed in a Hodges free kick in the last few minutes.

Billericay: Worster, McSweeney, Blewitt, Swaine (Game), Heffer, Dormer, Whelpdale, Hunter, Holland, Burbridge (Allen), Wareham (Hodges)
