SMOKERS have been warned to be on their guard against smuggled or counterfeit cigarettes at boot sales.
Crooks are known to sell dodgy tobacco at boot sales where they offer them at knock-down prices.
HM Customs and Revenue has joined forces with Essex County Council's trading standards team to warn people of the dangers of buying counterfeit goods.
A trading standards spokesman said: "We urge people not to buy cigarettes from car boot sales, regardless of how cheap they are.
"Although counterfeit cigarettes may seem no different, you do not know what they contain, and you could be inhaling all manner of dangerous chemicals."
Customs spokesman Jim Jarvis urged people not to be taken in by deals that seem too good to be true.
He said: "We are determined to eradicate this form of criminality which has a devastating effect on all our communities.
"This is not an innocent or victimless form of crime, but one that encourages otherwise honest people to trade with criminals."
People offered suspicious tobacco can call Custom's hotline on 0800 595000, or e-mail customs.
