YOUNG people who make a big difference to the lives of others are being sought for a top award.
Castle Point residents, voluntary organisations, youth clubs, schools and colleges are being asked to put forward the names of young people under 25 who deserve some recognition for making a difference in their community or organisation.
The Ann Joad Award is given annually to a young person who has made a difference by giving up some of their own time, and Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services is seeking nominations for 2007.
Last year's award was given to Reece Symeon, who was nominated by Castle View School for his fundraising achievements in aid of the RNLI.
The Mayor of Castle Point hosts an annual celebration to recognise the efforts made by volunteers in Castle Point.
This year, the event will be a garden party on Saturday, June 9, and it will be at this event that the special award for a young volunteer is made.
Michaela White, from the association, said: "Young people are often portrayed in a very negative light but many more are out there helping and assisting others.
"There are lots of children and young people who are very involved with clubs or activities and perhaps don't even realise they are volunteering.
"For instance, they may participate in a peer mentoring or befriending scheme, undertake fundraising for local clubs or help to coach others in a sporting activity.
"These are just a few examples and we want to hear about young people who give up their time to help others."
Every nomination received will be judged by a panel to decide who should receive the Ann Joad Award for a Young Volunteer but each nominee will receive a certificate as recognition for their volunteering and an invitation to the Mayor's Garden Party.
Nominations need to be received by Friday, May 11.
Information and nomination forms are available from the association on 01268 638416 or online at www.cavscastlepoint.org.uk.
