A MAN had a lucky escape after tackling a chip pan fire in his flat.

The 46-year-old man, of Lakeside Path, Canvey, was making a snack after a night out when the fire broke out in his kitchen early yesterday.

The man threw damp towels and a bucket of water over the kitchen cabinets to prevent the flames spreading, before calling 999 on his mobile. phone.

Two fire crews arrived at the scene and gave him oxygen after he suffered smoke inhiliation.

The ground floor flat was left heavily smoke logged and the kitchen damaged.
